Confession time here: Almost every member of my dh's family is obese. To be be fair, they are all very large people structurally (dh is 6'6", so is fil, mil is 6'), but they have no concept of nutrition and hate to any physical activity. They are all afraid of the water and as they say, they will do anything not to sweat. My family has their share of fighting weight, but it's more vanity weight. Whole family extremely active, sports scholarships to college, marathon runners, etc. Dh is an extraordinary man, and my dbs get so much from him. How do I take steps to keep dcs from becoming obese or have weight issues without "insulting" the lifestyle that my dh was brought up in? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

teach your dc the importance of nutrition and exercise. why do you think that dh would take that personally? He'd probably be relieved not to launch another generation of overweight people in his family. [ Reply | More ]

also, lead by example. take the kids on walks with you, on bike rides, etc. make a nice, healthy lifestyle for your whole family. teach your kids that being healthy is important, but there is always room for treats/indulgences here and there - i think that creates a nice balance. [ Reply | More ]
