New York moms are crazier about schools because there are not enough good schools for all the kids. This was not always the case. Growing up in NYC in the 80's the public school could be managed. G&T programs and tracking, etc. In trying to get rid of this in the name of fairness to those parents who didn't know better they ruined it for all. If you are going to be insane over some thing in your dc's life let it be school. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

sure it was easier back then, IF you lived in the right zone and/or you knew how to game the system. I think they've screwed up a lot for "us" but in the end, public school is about educating all our kids, not just ours, and anything that helps more kids get a leg up regardless of whether or not their parents have their act together is good for those kids and good for our city. I hate this attitude that just because "we" are so engaged "we" deserve more. Public schools are about the public good... we all need to fight for the best options for all of our kids. There are TONS of low income parents out there fighting for their kids. Many go parochial or charter. ALL our kid deserve good public options that teach to the needs of our particular kids. Maybe it's just because it's an election year but UB seems particularly divisive lately. For every mom who's on UB there are hundreds who are not, who can't afford the time, whose school choices are far more limited, who care every bit as much as you and I do about trying to do the best for their kids educationally. They may not be as sophisticated as your or me but they care just as much or more about their kids, and they have distain for those in their communities who don't. [ Reply | More ]
