I'm really glad we have an African American candidate, I think it's wonderful. But I can't help thinking he's going to lose, because his campaign, his supporters, and the press all just don't get it. They don't get how sad it is that the a woman who was equally, if not more, qualified was trashed and demonized, and her supporters were shouted down constantly. They don't get that you can't just order people to get into their place and support you. They don't get that the way she was treated was wrong, and people will remember that. That they have not only alienated women, but other core parts of the democratic party. They don't get that it is not racist to think of yourself as a "hard working white american". I wish I could believe he will be elected, but I don't think he can. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think he can, but also think it would be a very good thing for him to choose her as his running mate. Basically telling her that she lost and it's time to disappear does nothing except piss off very close to half (or more than half, if you count MI and FL) of the voters. [ Reply | More ]

np: I voted for HRC in February. The only person I'm pissed at right now is HRC herself. You shouldn't assume that 1/2 of the voters at mad at Obama, polls show it's a much much smaller percentage. [ Reply | More ]

ITA, from the exist polls on Tuesday over 60% of HRC voters will vote for Obama in November with no issue. And some of the ones that say they'll stay home (15-20%) will reconsider. He will need to work on that but has time to do it. [ Reply | More ]

It could hurt to have her - she wants attention only on herself, her DH is exactly the same way, they have already done this before and will have a very hard time playing second fiddle, I don't want another strong VP a la Cheney, even if it's a good politician. I could go on and on. [ Reply | More ]

HRC will lose him far more independents than she will gain him Democrats. She is the embodiments of the Karl Rove, turn-out-the-base, get 50% plus one and forget the independents politics... it's just antithetical to his campaign. [ Reply | More ]

It's the precise same philosophy: that the electoral map is unchanging, that the base is all that matters, that there are few true independents, and every election will be about getting Ohio and Florida and winning by 20 electoral votes or less... forever. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. But the main reason he can't choose her is that by going publicly after VP spot, Hillary backed him in the corner and if he gives into pressure and chooses her GOP will have a field day painting him as a weakling that can't make one decision on this own. He can't afford that. [ Reply | More ]

I am over it. I am not voting for him. I think he's going to lose. Hopefully, she won't be his vice president and he can lose on his own. He made a big mistake in winning this way, in not courting the votes he needs. If he does win, I'll be glad for him, but I don't think he'll be a very effective president. I just don't have much faith in him, and in the way that he won the nomination. He seems to be a product of the political system, and when he claims not to be it seems hypocritical to me. She did not get trashed any more than Obama has. I am offended by sexism as much if not more than most people, and I agree that sexism played a role, but it was NOT the only factor. She made many mistakes in her campaign, and was very heavy-handed in the end. Still, if by some strange quirk she had managed to pull it off, I would have not only voted for Clinton but worked for her to get republicans out of office. Any democrat who won't do the same because his/her feelings are hurt by a rough political process is extremely self-centered as far as I'm concerned, if they'd rather let the republicans win than get over their anger. And, btw, I was offended by the divisiveness of hardworking white American, since I fail to see the difference between hardworking white and hardworking black Americans, or the point of phrasing it that way, unless the goal was to divide people [ Reply | More ]

I don't agree with your premise that black people will vote for him just because he's black (kind of insulting, suggesting black people have no political views beyond color). It's more that Clinton was suggesting somehow that she understands hardworking white people (and not black people?) and Obama doesn't, because his father was black, which is, well, offensive. It's true. You come on with some BS about how you're delighted that there's an African American nominee, but you're "afraid" he will lose--then you get ticked off and say you've already decided you're not going to vote for him. Face it--the only acceptable restitution for you would be for him to step down and hand the nomination to its rightful owner, Hillary. As that is not going to happen, I bid you good day. Who said you're racist? (I don't even know if you're hardworking.) I just think you're disingenuous in saying you think his nomination is "wonderful." I think you're deeply angry your candidate lost and that despite what you say about his campaign needing to learn lessons, *nothing* they do would get you to vote for the guy who had the temerity to take her nomination away.
