Scariest thing happened today. Scary to me anyway. Was letting dd walk down the steps in the subway and was holding stroller as I stepped down in front of her. People were very nice in walking around us, etc. Out of the corner of my eye I see some man walk directly up to the step behind dd (we were walking down)and turned to let him know he could go around. He then reaches to pick her up under the arms! WTH?!! I said "please don't do that" and he said "oh, sorry," and walked down and around us. Come on. I've had people touch her feet and such while in the stroller, but never has a stranger tried to pick up my child! and right in front of me! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

ita - he was probably trying to help. I've had men grab the stroller out of my hand and carry it all the way up or down the stairs before I even got to say anything. [ Reply | More ]

Right. Like you all would totally fine with a stranger picking your kid up in the subway. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I often take the subway with 2 kids. Strangers REGULARLY pick up my stroller (with my newborn in it) while I attend to my son. I'm thankful for the help. [ Reply | More ]

Absolutely the same. Or how about this: we got on a crowded bus and DS was crying that he wanted to look out the window. A stranger picked him up and lifted him onto his lap so DS could look out the window. [ Reply | More ]

op: I realized that the man was only trying to help, however, ask before picking up my child. you would never touch someone's child that way w/o asking. take the stroller from my hands before you ever do that. [ Reply | More ]

Asking would have been nice, but I'd cut him a lot of slack on this. It sort of horrifies me that you reacted so negatively, actually. [ Reply | More ]

np: In the moment, I could imagine the reaction. Kind of odd she doesn't see how she overreacted now in retrospect. [ Reply | More ]

op: actually, i said it very nicely, "please don't do that." i wasn't mean, rude or curt to this person. this vent is all the after effects of how i felt about it. [ Reply | More ]

That you felt scared after the fact is the odd part. [ Reply | More ]

it is not over-reacting. i wouldn't like it either. what if he was trying to cop a feel. you think people don't do that??? [ Reply | More ]

Come on, isn't it a knee-jerk reaction? Someone you don't know picks up your kid and you would just stand there and do or say nothing? [ Reply | More ]

if you think people trying to help happens only in NY, and that's its beauty, you've got to get out more. [ Reply | More ]

I have had the kindest help from strangers. Once when I was holding my 2 year old, a stroller and a diaper bag, my 3 year old froze getting out of the subway (gap). THis nice man picked her up over the gap allowing me to then walk over. If he did not do that, I would have been stuck. [ Reply | More ]

nope. it was very evident that i was letting her do it by herself. it was not crowded at all. i had actually allowed all the crowd to go before we ever started. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with you it's weird and scary. people do really weird things they think are acceptable. probably just trying to help, but it would have freaked me out too. [ Reply | More ]

he was trying to help I'm sure. I would not have said" please don't do that". I would have said "that's ok, she can walk. but thank you" [ Reply | More ]

i hate to be difficult, but what is so problematic with a stranger picking up your kid in front of you. What nasty thing could happen in front of you. You should be grateful, not horrified that someone thought about you and your kid rather than pretending to ignore your situation. [ Reply | More ]

sorry. but there was no "situation" to be helped with. no one was struggling about anything other than we were in his way. [ Reply | More ]

I can understand your alarm, but I've struggled before with no offers of help, so I'd also appreciate his instinct! He should have asked, though. [ Reply | More ]
