Don't believe what they tell you. G&Ts are not accelerated. Anderson is 1 grade accelerated. Hunter is different and they can accommodate more than 1 grade acceleration. [ Reply | More ]

This needs clarification: Anderson is officially one year accelerated in Math. In other subjects they follow the NY State Education Curriculum Framework. HOWEVER: the way that curriculum is taught and the reading level of the materials used is often SEVERAL levels above what would be considered grade level. This goes for: English, Science Social Studies. So again: topics are on grade level...materials and expectations are way above. [ Reply | More ]

If your kid is 2 or more grades advanced, it's going to be almost impossible. No way of knowing. Depends on principal and teacher but they're mostly focused on supporting the slow kids. [ Reply | More ]

I think only city wide G&T school are accelerated. (Hunter is the different story) Other G&T (district wide)is more of a "enrichment," though has smarter peer than gen-ed -- so as a result could be slightly advanced than gen-ed -- but not accelerated. [ Reply | More ]

But some schools are know for individualizing learning within a classroom setting for kids of different abilities--I think PS87 has a reputation of being very good at this. [ Reply | More ]

But not if the kid is "too" advanced. Rep'n is that 199 is good at this (better than 87) but even at 199, many parents grumble. [ Reply | More ]

i am only going by reputation not personal experience (and trying to make myself feel better if my child ends up at 87 instead of our selected G&Ts!) [ Reply | More ]

~~also when I toured the g&t at 166 the parent coordinator admitted that teacher's there were not trained in differentiating instruction and that in fact they were being trained for that--so while they can presumably teach kids more quickly due to the higher scoring peer group they may be in fact worse at providing the right sort of challenge for each individual student [ Reply | More ]
