Need some opinions: we're moving to Queens and were planning to put dd (5) in good public school. now we're considering a very good parochial school that is a 15min drive. How important is it to you for your child to go to school locally and have friends from their school to play w/after school, etc. Do I just count on her making friends in neighborhood while her school friends live in other town? i think v. important when young - also for you as well. if you are close youwill get more involved w/ school but maybe you need to look at long term since middles schools are a challenge [ Reply | More ]

op: DD would be going into first grade, so it's a normal full day. There may be a bus she could take (Forest Hills to Flushing). The parochial school is Greek. She's learning Greek now and I love that aspect of the education. Greek schools (in my experience) tend to be a little traditional but a good education. Lots of siblings, cousins, etc. Just don't want to live in the car. Really not sure what to do.. [ Reply | More ]

first OR: i don't know what the right answer for you is, but i can tell you about my own experience. dd goes to a school that is fairly local but it happens to be that most of the kids from our neighborhood are in the other class. right now it doesn't matter so much b/c she is still in preschool and she plays with kids on her block. so if it's preschool, i'd say you should try it. also, it's most likely that a good number of students are also coming from other neighborhoods. op: I"m going to both the schools next week to take tours, etc. Hopefully I can find out if any kids locally do attend the Greek school. I think the benefits to the school outweigh the other considerations, partly because DD is so social and outgoing, she tends to make friends easily. Thanks for the thoughts everyone!! np: so you are sending her to St. Nick's. I think your dc will make plenty of friends there that live in queens. Most kids I know who go there are from Queens. Apparently its a very good school. [ Reply | More ]

op: thank you! I just posted about that school to get feedback. My inlaws rave about it, but I was hoping for more relevant, non biased opinions! [ Reply | More ]

op: I was still watching this. Heard this from 2 very reliable people... I think it's off our list. I'm not at all interested in that environment. [ Reply | More ]
