I don't think its a perception that those that attend public school couldn't get into private schools. It is a perception (a true one I believe) that those in public can't afford private schools though. I mean, in some cases parents choose public, but I bet most would send kids to private if they could easily afford it. Why not? I know I would. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

same here. I also don't like the nyc private school culture. I do not believe my child's future rests on where she goes to preschool. [ Reply | More ]

I refuse to put myself in the poor house to educate my 3 children among the very wealthy. I'm not about to spend $90K/yr for 3 dc non-college education. I'm not a fan of public school either. I'm pretty much down on school in general these days. [ Reply | More ]

how much do you pay for childcare, exclusive of education? [ Reply | More ]

exclusive of education? $3 for each time of gym babysitting. My dcs go to preschool, one in public and one in parochial ($625/mo). Love the parochial preschool, despise the public one. Thinking of keeping my older dc home w/ my next year for K. We'll see. This is not a homeschooling friendly area and it's a bit daunting to do something so against the grain. [ Reply | More ]

I cannot justify spending the amount of $$$ asked for private schools when we're zoned for a great public school. [ Reply | More ]

i'm kind of in the middle on this issue. i am sending to parochial school which, imo, has a lot of the perceived benefits or private but without the really high cost and without the elitism. I think the problem is that a lot of public schools are not doing a good job when it comes to education. With private, you are picking the school and even if it's not a top notch school, you have enough of a choice. [ Reply | More ]

I feel that in NYC, you also have many public school choices, with some luck. [ Reply | More ]
