those of you going crazy debating the ins and outs of nest vs anderson etc-- how much of a difference do you really think this will make in your child's life? do you really think one vs the other will really alter your kid's life that you are obsessing over this? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I interview kids in top private and public high schools -- that is where the differences shine through as well as city kids vs. top-ranked suburban schools such as Bronxville, Scarsdale, Great Neck, Roslyn, Maplewood, etc. There is NO difference between Anderson and NEST other than teacher: student ration and the QUALITY of parents. It's really the PARENTS who drive the values, ambitions, additional financial resources, planning/PTA etc -- and this comes through in top public high schools as well. [ Reply | More ]

so funny. thats what i always say. i went to a private school in bklyn with ZERO admission tests (my kids go too). 100% of the graduates go to college and at least 25% to ivies. the kids are always a great blend of average to genius--the only common factors is they all come from good families with good values. that's the only key to success in education that i see [ Reply | More ]

BINGO. it's about the money. If you're a successful adult who went to an Ivy League school or top schools as well as graduate schools as did your grandparents and parents (as is the situation in my case) -- or if you are a first generation Korean-American family and your parents place Education as #1 priority, then you can rest assured that the kids pick up these goals, ambitions, opportunities for top internships, international travel projects, etc. from involved parents. This is also why kids in the Bronx are not going to be part of the economic success story unless they are an exception --- they simply don't have the home life including financial resources (good schools, music lessons, quality sleepaway camps) to get ahead with programs such as PrepForPrep being the obvious exceptions [ Reply | More ]

no, i really dont think it was about money. plenty of poor kids in my class. for most of us, our grandparents were holocaust survivors who never had any formal education. some of us had parents who went to college, many didnt. [ Reply | More ]

absolutely. i'm just saying that i cant imagine it really makes a big difference-- all of these top rated ps and privates likely have a similarly motivated parent body . i just cant understand how these small differences amount to anything. just send your kid where it's convenient and where they will have friends in the neighborhood. that's what makes kids happy and successful. not the amount of languages offered. Weak argument! Then parents should send their kids to a failing school in Harlem (of which there are many) because a single mom can't afford to live on the UWS close to Anderson? [ Reply | More ]

i said once it comes down to the top rated schools being debated here 24/7, then it only makes sense to me to consider convenience and social factors. obviously i dont mean to say all ps are equal. [ Reply | More ]

The men stay in the same industries, passing down jobs and the woman are traditional, not really amounting to much beyond the household. I find that so sad (mostly for the women, forced to stay in bad marriages and not many options for themselves in terms of exploring their dreams beyond the staunch constraints of this particular Jewish culture) [ Reply | More ]

very much not the case. in my hs class of 100 (all girls), 5 went to med school, about 10 law school, the rest assorted professions of every type. the stereotypes you are talking about really only exist today in chassidic communities. all my friends who want to work go to work in whatever field they chose. those that want to sah do so also (though all have at least college degrees). i really dont know where you get your outdated info from. I do not know a single sr woman on Wall St or even in mid management position or in a major law firm who went to a Yeshiva!!! most the MEN would not allow their wives to have a high-paying, high-ranking, influential position. a HUGE problem for many women, not just these particular Jewish women. Many men are still threatened by powerful, successful women, sadly. Most of my Jewish guy friends (and ex boyfriends) loved the fact that I earned 2x more than they did. I'm a Shiksa Menschette with many Jewish friends FWIW [ Reply | More ]

good for them until their husband cheats on them, they get divorced then wish they had maintained a job outside the home to support their kids. I do NOT believe that women should be strongly encouraged to be homemakers. not in today's modern world with men having so much economic power vs. women overall [ Reply | More ]

does it occur to you that this is what they want to do with their lives? i woh pt, but would never want to give up my role as a mom. i dont consider it archaic. i consider it the most important job in the world. i feel sad for your kids that you view caring for them as archaic. [ Reply | More ]
