Does anyone know what they are going to do about G&T's student's spots that don't accept their placements? I've heard that there isn't going to be a waitlist, but there will be spots. If we get into our 2nd choice and accept it, does it mean if a spot opens in our 1st choice that we won't get the opportunity to get that slot? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

as it stands now, they will over accept. No, you will not have a chance at the first choice spot later, if any spots open the MAY fill with people who move her and test over summer. BUT, The DOE is pretty reactive. If they see this develops into a huge problem with lots of seats left unfilled, they will find a way to deal. [ Reply | More ]

and then everyone will call them out for not having known a head of time that this would happen. (Granted the DOE can suck but...) [ Reply | More ]

np: Of course they know this will happen. The fewer G&T seats, the better from the DOE's perspective, because they can use that to justify fewer & fewer resources for G&T in the future. [ Reply | More ]

This is silly. there were always plenty of unclaimed seats and it will continue. People just have no interest in some programs. [ Reply | More ]

This doesn't fall in line with the fact that the DOE lowered the cutoff. I know some believe they are anti g&t, but their actions don't seem to fit that. [ Reply | More ]

There's no waitlist, so once you get your placement, that's it. I get the impression that when there were waitlists, all sorts of gaming went on. [ Reply | More ]

But there's no way that the DOE is going to be able to predict (esp with their track record) class sizes of 22/24/28. They're going to either under or over enroll, esp at A, Nest and LL. Why can't they think a couple steps ahead once in a while? [ Reply | More ]

Actually I think in the coveted programs, there won't be a problem. It's in the lesser known or untried District G&T programs where this will manifest itself. Those are the programs where people will actually turn offers down. And, numerically those programs affect FAR, FAR more children. [ Reply | More ]

np: There is no problem. These programs will be underenrolled as they have always been. As long as there are 10 kids they will have a class for them. Good for the kids, IMO> [ Reply | More ]

but someone said the gaming is a problem. are you saying that no one will choose the lesser G&Ts? If so, I cannot see how gaming makes that more likely. people are not going to send their dc to a school they don't like if they can help it [ Reply | More ]

Right, it's a different issue than gaming. I posted below my view on gaming. It has no place in public system as it once again hugely favors UMC families. [ Reply | More ]

the problem here is not gaming but those parents who hedged their bets by selecting schools they might not use. That will hurt folks if those are high scoring kids who really only would accept 1 school, but get a different one and take that spot out of the running for others who want it [ Reply | More ]

yes, but the most popular programs will fill their seats and that's what matters. In the grand view of things nobody cares if your kid will get that spot or somebody else who is equally qualified. [ Reply | More ]

but they won't--that is my point. Example--Nest has 125 seats. It accepts 125 and turns down 100 who get a lower choice. Of the 125 it accepts just 100 enroll. 25 seats go unfilled. [ Reply | More ]

I see no problem with gaming. if you have a smart kid and are convinced of their ability and testing skills you put fewer choices. Its a risk, but everyone has to take risks in life. some people with average kids or kids who don't test well, will put more options. what could possibly be negative about this? [ Reply | More ]

ITTTA! No different than the private school process. strong applicant, apply to fewer schools and vice versa. why is this gaming? [ Reply | More ]

This is a public school, where most parents have no resources to try to game the system. So playing with the WL just gives advantage to UMC families (who are also more likely to have a good gen ed fallback). The no-WL thing works very well at HS level, it will work at elementary level too once they figure out the kinks. The WL has always been a huge mess. [ Reply | More ]

np: it will always be MC/UMC families most interested in and seeking out G&Ts. their kids will likely score the highest at age 4 as well. so I see no reason to disallow hanging on a w/l. it will not impact the kids without resources on iota [ Reply | More ]

because if you spread around the wealth too much, none of the schools will be worth attending. better to concentrate the smartest kids with the most resources in a few schools and build up those schools. [ Reply | More ]
