here's the deal. the doe doesn't have money to keep the k-5 schools running without cutbacks. we can either cut even more so that there is public pre-k for everyone, and thus every umc mommy in park slope can have free babysitting, or we can put the money where it matters and leave the public pre-k's to people who desperately need them. you choose. False choice. Also, one that you could just as well apply to every grade. Send the umc's to private school and free up resources for the working class! Ah, but that's different, right? NP: Look around you. We live in a city of stark contrast between the ultra-wealthy and families who don't know where their next meal is coming from. I'm not saying that I agree with OR, or the implication of her statement to OP. Who knows the OP's situation. But distribution of scarce resources is a legitimate concern, especially with this Administration cutting school budgets when the city has a $4Billion budget SURPLUS. And trying to cut deals with private schools to give them unfettered access to public land (ie, Randall's Island) when public schools in the inner city have no such opportunities. np: well, i don't live in ny. i live in sf and although our public school is all of 3 blocks from my house and i pay probably 20x the property taxes of my neighbors due to prop 13, i will most likely have to pay for private school on top of all that i pay in taxes. our public schools are on a lottery system, so my child may be shipped across town to a public school that he might get into or i'll have to shell out 20k for kindergarten. this makes no sense either.
